    Our Spring homeschool series focuses on “phenology” - nature’s calendar. It is the study of seasonal changes in plant and animal life-cycles such as date flowers begin to bloom or frogs start singing in the spring. Month to month, we will make and record weather observations and check in with the plants and animals at Flag Ponds Park - watching as spring changes to summer.     The public is invited to share memories of Calvert County, the Patterson Family, JPPM or those who may have once worked this land. If you do not have a story to share, come enjoy the tour and hear the memories of others. Point Farm was the country retreat of the late Mr. & Mrs. Jefferson Patterson. In 1983 Mrs. Patterson donated the property to the state in honor of her late husband, creating Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum. Join us for a guided tour of this beautiful 1933 Colonial Revival brick house and gardens designed by noted female architects Gertrude Sawyer and Rose Greely.   8. Hellen Creek Hemlock Preserve Hike

    Hellen Creek Preserve harbors part of an isolated stand of eastern hemlock, the southern-most in Maryland. Some species of plants and animals found here are more characteristic of the Appalachian forest in western Maryland. Hemlocks are just one of a number of interesting plants. One inland wetland includes pawpaw, sassafras, sweet bay magnolia, and winterberry in a braiding streambed. Be prepared for some difficult terrain, with some up and down and not all on trails; steep in places and wet in others.Wear long pants and sleeves, good hiking shoes/boots, some areas may be muddy. Bring water bottle, snacks and/or lunch. Optional: Field guides, 10x hand lens, binoculars. Registration required; see link provided. (adults and teens 16 and up)
